Block Facebook status updates from people annoying you

If you’re reading this post, I’m going to assume that you’re a regular user of Facebook. And if you’ve used Facebook for any substantial period of time, you’ve probably noticed something unexpected and incredibly annoying.

Some people you know– friends, family, and co-workers — are prolific posters on Facebook. “Crazy Status Updaters,” if you will.

They update their status regularly. Sometimes it’s every hour. Sometimes it’s every 1/2 hour. And in some extreme cases, more often than that. This would be bad enough, as you mindlessly browse Facebook looking for something interesting going on among your friends and family. But what kills you is that you realize you didn’t actually know these people in the first place. Some believe they are poets, ripping quotes from famous people to describe their own life. Others become addicted to Facebook quizzes, applications, and games. In some cases, you end up learning more about people than you ever hoped to know– relationship troubles, dying pets. It’s like someone forcing you to read a diary you don’t want to read.

Luckily, there’s a way to keep your sanity! Facebook has an option (although it’s not easily
found) that allows you to block/hide posts from the people driving you crazy.

On the main Facebook screen (otherwise known as the “News Feed”) you will see a list of all status updates and posts from all of your friends. You can hide posts from any person/organization by hovering your mouse cursor to the right of the post as shown below:

How to block Facebook status updates from your friends and family that you dont want to see.

You will get the option to “Hide {person name]”. Click the link and POOF! No more updates from this person in your Facebook News Feed.

Once you try this feature and realize you can play god with people’s Facebook posts, essentially regaining your sanity through this new information filter, you may get trigger happy. It’s possible you will get excited and start hiding posts from everyone, leaving your page with only updates from a few people. Luckily, there’s a way to re-introduce the originally shunned Facebook posters back into your world. To get the hidden posts to show again, click the “Edit Options” link at the bottom of the page. This will open a window that will show you all of the current updates you’re hiding as well as an option to add them back.
