Google Webmaster Tools now allows multiple site owners
If you are a webmaster or involved in search engine optimization (SEO) you likely spend a great deal of time using Google Webmaster Tools. Among its many benefits are revealing critical site errors (404s and bad links), management of site maps (including Google News and Google Video), and, most recently, information about page performance/load time. Paying attention to all of these elements can help significantly improve the quality of a Web site as well as its ability to perform well in Google.
One of the annoying limitations of Webmaster Tools has historically been the inability to allow multiple Google account holders access to the tool. To allow multiple people access basically meant sharing a login across your team or organization. Obviously not the best solution.
I was pleasantly surprised yesterday at work when I logged in and found a new option next to the list of sites we currently manage. Google has finally added the ability to add and remove site owners to Google Webmaster Tools.
Here’s a screenshot of how the option appears inside Webmaster Tools:

This improvement is long overdue but it’s welcomed with open arms. For large organizations it provides the opportunity for the developers/SEO folks to share the value of Webmaster Tools across a larger audience of stakeholders without having to pass out their personal email address/shared login. For marketing and SEM/SEO agencies it drastically simplifies the process of getting access to a client’s Google Webmaster Tools account, as there should no longer be any fear about sharing logins with an outside agency.
